Steve Spiker (Spike) is a certified Geographic Information System Professional (GISP) and is currently the Director of Research & Technology at the Urban Strategies Council, a nonprofit community capacity building and support organization. He has a Master of Science (GIS) from Curtin University in Western Australia and a bachelors in Surveying and Mapping from the same institution. He has worked as a spatial epidemiologist with the West Australian Department of Health in the Population Health Unit, freelance GIS consultant to local government, a licensed land surveyor and as a network support tech for Guinness in the UK. He is a professional photographer in his spare(???) time and manages the website www.stealingbeautyphotography.com as well as a number of other websites and blogs for his day job.
Spike has extensive experience assisting small to large organizations plan out their GIS implementations, particularly local government agencies and nonprofit groups. Having used all the major desktop systems extensively he can provide independent advice on the most suitable tools to apply to your needs. He has implemented and prototypes spatial databases and web based mapping platforms for private businesses, non profits and government agencies. He currently manages the complete IT systems for the Urban Strategies Council and coordinates all research, evaluative and technical projects for the Council and is the lead liaison for the council with the NNIP group which the Council founded several years ago.
His passion for GIS and nonprofit missions keeps him excited to work in this area and his main focus is on the use of GIS in public health, social justice and education fields.
