Google Earth is a locally installed program to access and more recently to create and manipulate data over the web and on your local network.
Something of a craze, Google Earth has become an addiction for many users. The Pro version goes for $400 per year and offers the ability to import and export shapefiles from your regular GIS programs, large spreadsheets and more into the interface, you can then publish those data with a lot of useful edits and symbology modifications to the web community for sharing with your staff, partners and the rest of the community- and the Google Earth community is large! As a nonprofit you can apply for their grant which gets you the pro version free each year. Well worth looking into, this program allows you to take local data, meld it into the format you want and then publish it to the web, embed it into your organization's web pages and more. Very powerful and quite a mature platform, it offers a huge array of data uploaded by other users the world over. |
